Children benefited

Chennai city is experiencing tremendous economic growth. The growth is unequal between the cities and the villages. This is due to lack of opportunities available to children in terms of education. We at RC Ambattur are desirous of providing children with equal opportunities through our Ayappakkam Centre.

Ayappakkam came into being courtesy Rtn Dr Martin Gutsche from RC Oldenberg Germany and his desire to do something towards education of children. He donated a 1200 square  feet of land with a building of 160 square feet to RCA. Today we have a 2500 square feet  building, inaugurated on 22nd August 2018, funded exclusively by RCA’s own resources ,United Way, the Neumayer Trust and philanthropists ,which is used to provide better facilities to children in various ways to help in the after school education.

We would also like to start vocational training and career guidance and provide exposure to employment opportunities besides training and education to youth and women focusing on “Education”, Vocational Skill development ,training of children , youth and  women in the Ayappakkam area and surroundings which would  benefit the community at large.

What started with just two students and one staff in June 2015, now has grown in strength and impact in five years. Currently, we educate around 125 students enrolled from Std I to X, through 5 staffs and 3 volunteers.

The journey began as any other normal after-school tuition class in a small place but has evolved into a multi-ability community center in a new facility catering to all types of students with holistic approach.

Our overall impact:

  • Improved quality of living for the children

  • Learning has become joyful

  • Students look forward to going back to school the next day

  • Visible improvement in their marks

  • Visible improvement in understanding concepts and academics.

Even though Government takes efforts to provide education to all, quality education is not a reality in many places. This is more evident in semi urban and rural areas. To combat this, Rotary Club of Ambattur started this center to provide free education to all school going children. Majority of our students are from nearby Government schools and some are from private schools. We have multi-ability classes – both English and Tamil medium and mixed age groups.

To strengthen learning practices, we also encourage students to do regular meditation, physical exercises, ice breakers, visual learning using internet and TV (moral stories & science experiments) and stress reliving fun activities like drawing, growing your own garden with recycled materials, art & craft etc. For adolescent students, we have online sessions through skype on puberty, emotions management and hormonal changes.

Our commitment to project is vindicated by the following

  • RCA has spent almost Rs. 50.0 Lakhs (US $ 70,000) from its own resources in the construction of the new building showing its commitment to this project.

  • Project running expenses being borne by RCA on monthly basis.

  • While construction of new building was on, RCA had taken a place on rent, next door adjacent and managed our classes without any break in the running of the school.

  • Children have shown a remarkable improvement in their studies and now doing well in school.

  • We have been having regular online classes even during this pandemic, when schools are closed, to keep students connected with learning of their subjects
